TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS NOW OFFERED MORE SECURE CELLULAR SERVICE
BEDMINSTER, N.J., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems, Inc., today announced a capability in its mobile telephone switch designed to provide increased security for government users and future commercial users of STU III (Secure Telephone Unit) cellular phones. The service is available in the company's Washington, D.C., market.
The STU III privacy interface is designed to protect the radiowave portion of cellular calls between a STU III cellular phone and an unsecured telephone. STU III phones are controlled by the National Security Agency (NSA) for government users with classified security clearances, and jointly by NSA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for unclassified and commercial uses. There are more than 300,000 STU III landline and cellular phones in use today.
Conversations between two STU III phones can be secured end-to-end. Prior to today's introduction of Bell Atlantic Mobile's interface, in a call between a STU III phone and a non-STU phone, the vulnerable radiowave portion of the call was not secure from scanner interception.
The new privacy interface adds STU III levels of protection to the radio-transmitted segments of such calls, permitting the transmission of "sensitive but unclassified" information.
Users can invoke the privacy service on a call either at the beginning of the call or at any time during their conversation. Both the STU III or other phone can invoke the command; it is triggered by dialing a command on the phone's keypad.
The STU III interface protects both voice and data transmissions. It is approved by the NSA for "sensitive but unclassified" cellular transmissions.
The combined operations of the Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems and Bell Atlantic Metro Mobile companies comprise the largest cellular carrier on the East Coast and one of the largest carriers in North America, serving a total population (POPs) of 34 million. Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems and Bell Atlantic Metro Mobile provide cellular service and equipment in 30 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and 21 rural service areas (RSAs) in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Carolinas, and the Southwest. Headquartered in Bedminster, N.J., the companies are subsidiaries of Philadelphia-based Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE: BEL).
