Research Methodology Data was provided directly by retailers, secured from Securities and Exchange Commission filings or estimated by HFN.

Some years are fiscal. For franchised companies, estimates reflect income of all franchisees. Some data include Canadian, Mexican or overseas operations.

Sales data usually exclude interest, delivery and other ancillary revenues, where possible.

Where two retailers report the same home sales, they are given the same ranking.

For some retailers, 2001 data and rankings were restated to account for newly acquired information, or acquisitions, divestments and other factors specified in SEC filings.
