TOOLING PRODUCTION BEGINS ON GRACE CAMET'S AUTO EMISSIONS CONTROL UNIT
BOCA RATON, Fla., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) today announced that its Camet subsidiary has started tooling for production of automotive electrically heated catalytic (EHC) converters at its Hiram, Ohio facility.
This new EHC converter reduces emissions in the "coldstart" phase of driving, which occurs in the first several minutes of operation. The device should help car makers to meet the lower levels mandated by California's Low and Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle programs. A number of other states, including Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania, are actively considering adoption of the California standards.
"The introduction of this new catalytic converter marks a breakthrough which can lead to a dramatic improvement in the quality of this nation's air," said Dr. F. Peter Boer, Grace executive vice president and chief technical officer. "Extensive testing has demonstrated the necessary mechanical durability and performance which together should provide amore reliable system than other alternatives." EHC converters are usually mounted upstream of conventional catalytic converters. EHCs eliminate 60 to 80 percent of the residual tailpipe emissions, both hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, which escape from current catalytic systems in the initial several minutes before they become effective.
The initial production tooling will have capacity to build 50,000 units per year, and tooling expansion is planned over the next two years. Flexible tooling concepts are employed to permit production of a wide range of EHC models.
Grace is the world's largest specialty chemicals company with a leadership position in health care.
