TOMS RIVER PLANT RECOGNIZED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS
 TOMS RIVER, N.J., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- CIBA-GEIGY's Toms River

plant has been honored by the National Environmental Awards Council. The council awarded the plant Renew America's Certificate of Achievement for its efforts to reduce wastewater in the dye standardization process.
"This award is an honor to all those associated with the plant who have put first in their jobs the safety and cleanliness of the environment," said John Simas, vice president of environmental affairs and site manager at Toms River.
The certificate was awarded for the Standardization Without Effluent at Toms River, or SWEAT Project. SWEAT uses the processes of ultra- filtration, reverse osmosis and high-pressure cleaning technology in the dye-standardization process at the plant.
With SWEAT the dye-formulation process has reduced wastewater from 400,000 gallons per day to an average of 4,000 gallons per day -- a reduction of more than 99 percent. The water is recycled and used over and over to clean dye mixing kettles. The process also recovers about 200 pounds of dye per day that was previously lost as waste.
Dyes produced at Toms River are produced with such high standards of quality that there are virtually no discernible differences between the dye lots produced and the established quality standards set for each dye formulated at the site. As a result, many Toms River customers find it unnecessary to run quality checks on products received from the Toms River facility.
The National Environmental Awards Council represents 28 leading environmental organizations, including the National Audubon Society, the Izaak Walton League of America, and Trout Unlimited.
This is the second award received from the council by the Toms River site. In 1990, CIBA-GEIGY was recognized for the significant improvements made to the plant's wastewater treatment facility.
SWEAT will be listed in Renew America's 1992 Environmental Success Index, the most comprehensive guide to the nation's environmental programs. Updated annually, the index serves as a directory of environmental solutions in the United States.
