TOM CHAPLIN PROMOTED TO PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
 AT UNILENS CORP. USA
LARGO, Fla., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Unilens Corp. U.S.A., the Florida-based operating subsidiary of Unilens Optical Corp. (NASDAQ: UOCCF), announced today that it has promoted Tom Chaplin to president and chief operating officer. Unilens also announced the appointment of Brian K. Eye to the position of senior vice president, Finance and Administration.
Tom Chaplin previously served as national sales manager for Unilens. Previously, he was senior director of contact lens marketing and director of national sales -- contact lenses for Allergan Optical/American Hydron. During his tenure with Hydron, he led the company through a consistent growth in market share from 1980 through 1990. He received a special President's Award, an honor that no other employee at Hydron had ever received, for extraordinary performance.
Chaplin is taking charge of Unilens at an opportune time -- Unilens this year achieved the number one market share position for multifocal contact lenses in the U.S.
"I expect to see significant rates of growth in our market in the coming years," said Chaplin. "We are currently the market leader because we manufacture the most effective contact lenses available for the correction of presbyopia." (Presbyopia is a naturally occurring condition that eventually affects virtually everyone over 40 at some point in their lives.)
Chaplin added, "The Unilens Contact Lens System has a high success rate that eyecare practitioners are rapidly accepting. Unilens' sales growth has far surpassed the growth of other participants in the multifocal contact lens market. The percentage of the U.S. population over 40 is increasing rapidly, and is expected to climb to 118 million people by the year 2000. This phenomenon will bring a tremendous growth in the demand for Unilens products."
Chaplin graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in business administration, double majoring in finance and marketing.
Brian K. Eye previously served as Unilens' vice president of finance, a position he was promoted to after a year with the company as director of finance. Prior to this, he was a partner at the accounting firm of Rollins, Cleavenger & Rollins in Charleston, W. Va. He has also worked as a controller for Adams, McCullough & Beard, a law firm with offices in Raleigh, N.C. and Washington, D.C.
In his new position, Eye is in charge of all financial and administrative activities for Unilens and its subsidiaries.
Eye, a certified public accountant, graduated from Concord College in Athens, W. Va., with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
