TOLEDO ASSEMBLY TO ADD 850 JOBS FOR JEEP WRANGLER PRODUCTION

TOLEDO ASSEMBLY TO ADD 850 JOBS FOR JEEP WRANGLER PRODUCTION
TOLEDO, Ohio, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 850 hourly jobs may be added to Chrysler Corporation's Toledo Assembly plant for production of the Jeep(R) Wrangler and right-hand drive Jeep Cherokees.
Those positions will be filled by Toledo assembly workers who were recently given layoff notices. Approximately 100 hourly workers will start at Toledo in February 1992 to prepare for Jeep Wrangler production and more than 700 are projected to be added in June. The first 1993 Jeep Wrangler will be completed in the beginning of July. Adding right-hand drive Jeep Cherokee production could create another 25 to 50 jobs.
The Jeep Wrangler is currently made in Brampton, Ontario. Production there will end in April and Brampton's workforce will be folded into the nearby Bramalea Assembly Plant, where Chrysler will begin production of the all-new 1993 Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision and Chrysler Concorde mid-size sedans next summer.
Chrysler will use both the Jeep Parkway plant and the Stickney plant for Jeep Wrangler production. The vehicle's body will be assembled and painted at Jeep Parkway. Those bodies will be trucked to Stickney where the chassis, engine and trim components will be added.
Stickney has been mothballed since Jeep Grand Wagoneer production ended in June.
The Jeep Wrangler decision was first announced last year following agreements with the plant's two union locals, state and local government. The city and state pledged tax abatement, labor training and infrastructure improvements, such as new water pipelines, in an effort to help bring Jeep Wrangler production to Toledo.
Chrysler will invest nearly $40 million to prepare the Jeep Parkway and Stickney facilities and employees for Jeep Wrangler and right-hand drive Jeep Cherokee production. Of that, nearly $1 million will be spent to add anti-lock brakes to the Jeep Wrangler.
For the first time, Toledo will begin making right-hand drive Jeep Cherokees for export. The plant will build right-hand drive units, beginning in October 1992, for Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
The Jeep Cherokee continues as the top-selling Chrysler model in all markets outside of North America. Sales totaled 16,019 through the first nine months, up 8 percent from the 14,839 units sold in the first nine months of 1990.
On the domestic front, Jeep Cherokee recently topped 1 million U.S. sales, and has had sales of more than 100,000 for seven consecutive years.
