TOKO INC. AND UNITRODE INTEGRATED CIRCUITS CORP. ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Toko Inc. and Unitrode Integrated Circuits Corp. (U.I.C.C.) announced the formation of an alliance between the two companies. Company spokesmen indicated that the alliance had been formed to pursue joint product developments in power management integrated circuits, which will encourage and accelerate the development of advanced new products for the power control market. Under the terms of the agreement between TOKO and U.I.C.C., each company will provide the other with design details, mask layouts and test programs, so that devices manufactured by either source will perform identically in any application.
Kent Kitano, President of TOKO America, Inc., says an important aspect of this alliance is the collaboration in development of new and more sophisticated
products. Trying to keep up with the needs and desires of our customers is becoming an increasing challenge. By combining the product definition and circuit design resources of TOKO and U.I.C.C., each company can achieve a greater number of new product introductions, satisfying the specific design requirements of our customers.''
An additional purpose for the TOKO/U.I.C.C. alliance is to cross license select proprietary products from each company in order to satisfy customer
requests for multiple sources of these critical components. The acceptance of a revolutionary concept in power control will be greatly accelerated by the availability of product from more than one source,'' said Louis Burgyan,
Director of TOKO I.C. Design. U.I.C.C.'s reputation as an industry leader in the field of power management will make a substantial contribution to the popularity of these new products.''
The first products to be exchanged are U.I.C.C.'S successful UCI854 family of High Power Factor Control ICs and TOKO's newly introduced TK75001 and TK75002 Isolated Power control chip set. According to Burgyan, the TK75001 and TK75002 represent an innovative new approach for implementing isolated, off-line power supplies without the need for an optical coupler. The chip set, which provides direct feedback with an extremely low-cost magnetic coupling, represents a new technology for which patent applications have been filed.
According to Bob Mammano, V.P. of Advanced Technology for U.I.C.C., The high performance of the UC1854 PFC controllers has made them the industry standard, even as a sole source product. Now with the added capacity from TOKO, we will be able to effectively meet increasing demand.'' The UC1854 uses a patented technology licensed by U.I.C.C. from Pioneer Magnetics, and as part of the exchange, Unitrode will sub license TOKO.
TOKO, Inc., headquartered in Toyko, Japan, is a multinational manufacturer of inductors, filters and surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, in addition to monolithic integrated circuits. Unitrode Integrated Circuits Corp., headquartered in Merrimack, N.H., a subsidiary of Unitrode Corp. (NYSE: UTR), is a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance power management integrated circuits for power supplies, motor controllers and other power management applications.
Dennis A. Peasenell, V.P. of Unitrode Corp. and President of U.I.C.C.
indicated that, An additional benefit of this alliance is that it offers both companies greater worldwide visibility. TOKO's marketing activities in Japan will add to the credibility of U.I.C.C. designs, while U.I.C.C.'s recognition in Europe will accomplish the same benefits for TOKO.''
