TOFUTTI EXECUTIVE LAUDS FINDING: TOFU DIET MAY LIMIT PROSTATE-CANCER DEATHS; JAPANESE, FINNISH RESEARCH SUPPORTS TOFU HEALTH BENEFITS

 CRANFORD, N.J., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Executives from Tofutti, Inc., laud the recent findings that a diet high in tofu may limit death by prostate-cancer as yet another health benefit of adding more tofu to the diet.
 David Mintz, President and inventor of Tofutti, a tofu/soy-based dessert discovered in the early 1980's, says that the new study proves again that tofu is indeed a crucial element of a healthy diet. "For millions of people around the world tofu added to the daily diet can make a tremendous difference in their health and longevity," says Mintz.  The current study, conducted by scientists in Japan and Finland, was reported in the Wall Street Journal on Monday, Nov. 29. One Japanese and two Finnish scientists recently teamed up to see if diet could explain why Japanese men have a lower death rate from prostate cancer than Westerners. The scientists noted that Japanese men, whose diet is rich in daily intake of rice and tofu, have a much lower rate of prostate cancer than western men who do not regularly eat a diet high in tofu and rice.
 The study analyzed blood samples from 14 Japanese men who ate the typical soy-rich Japanese diet and 14 Finnish men who ate the typical dairy and meat diet of Finland. The levels of the estrogen-like isoflavonoids, the plant version of the female hormone estrogen that inhibit the growth of cancer cells, were seven to 114 times higher in the blood of the Japanese men than in the Finns. The study appeared in the November issue of the British medical journal, The Lancet.
 According to Mintz the new findings add to a list of health benefits that already make tofu the right choice for a healthier diet. "Toffutti already is lower in fat, has no cholesterol and is non-dairy, this new finding adds yet another crucial health benefit to the century-old food, tofu."
