TODHUNTER INTERNATIONAL RESPONDS TO U.S. EPA ALLEGATIONS

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Todhunter International, Inc. (NASDAQ: TODH) d/b/a Florida Distillers Co., a distiller of alcoholic beverages, was cited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Atlanta Region, in an Administrative Complaint served Friday, July 16, 1993, alleging violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and seeking civil penalties of up to $781,400.
 A. Kenneth Pincourt Jr., president of Todhunter International, Inc., stated that "The EPA has alleged that the company burned a small amount of alcohol by-products that are produced in the company's manufacture of alcoholic beverages on five occasions during 1991 and 1992. We began to burn these materials in the early 1970s to reduce water pollution and our use of imported fuel oil. We believe that the by-products are clean-burning and present no potential for harm to human health or the environment. The company believes, in fact, that its historic uses of by-products has been environmentally beneficial. The company currently sells such by-products, in compliance with EPA requirements, to manufacturers of other alcohol derived products, such as fragrance producers, or disposes of the by-products through licensed waste disposers that burn the by-products for the company. For these reasons, the company plans to vigorously defend the EPA enforcement action and believes that any penalty ultimately imposed will be substantially less than the amount being sought by the EPA."
The EPA action will not have any measurable impact on the company's continuation of its current manufacturing operations, and the company expects that the procedure and any penalty that an administrative law judge may impose on the company will also not have a material adverse affect upon the company's financial position or results of operations. In addition, the company does not expect that it will be required to provide for any reserve on its financial statements with respect to the EPA Procedure.
