70s 1976 It was hotter on Tyneside today, than in Tenerife. For as the temperature soared up into the 70s, it topped many holiday resorts abroad. The Newcastle Weather Centre had forecast temperatures of over 80F for at the least the next 48 hours.

80s 1989 John Hall and his Magpie Group today jumped in to back a second band of supporters demanding change at Newcastle United. The United Supporters for Change Group are calling for a boycott of season ticket holders in an effort to force democracy in the club.

90s 1994 A football team is appealing for a kick-start to a marathon charity event. The side, made up of jobless Gateshead men, is planning to pedal up the pounds for a children's charity with a cycle ride - but organiser Alan Smith says they needed unwanted cycling equipment.

00s 2002 Tyneside drugs baron Philip Legender has been jailed after Spanish police smashed his Costa del Sol narcotics ring. The 34-year-old Mr Big from Gateshead will now spend the next four years in a Spanish cell after cops arrested him over a pounds 100,000 cannabis haul.
