1974 The Queen was given a real Geordie welcome this afternoon during a walkabout in Newcastle. She came face to face with hundreds of cheering, ecstatic people as she left the Civic Centre and walked down towards St Mary's Place.

1982 Paper boy Craig Armstrong smiled for the first time in 24 hours today. Craig, who yesterday had his second cycle in a fortnight stolen while making his morning deliveries, received a big surprise, thanks to the Evening Chronicle and the North Eastern Co-op. Craig has a new replacement cycle with all the trimmings.

1991 A horse called Tamarpour may have captured the big prize at Newcastle races on Saturday but the star of the show for many Tynesiders was our own Canny Chronicle. The Evening Chronicle horse chose the biggest day of the year at Gosforth Park, Plate Day, to register his first victory.

2005 Flood-hit families were today cleaning up after freak storms swamped Tyneside. Damage running into hundreds of thousands of pounds was caused after the downpour brought chaos, forcing homes to be evacuated.
