70s 1979 In a major bid to crack down on drinking drivers, the Government was considering "random" breath test. Anyone even thought to have been drinking - whether they had been in an accident, committed a traffic offence or simply been driving erratically - could be stopped and breathalysed.

80s 1982 Five people died and one was missing after a collision between two ferries near Harwich. Some of the survivors were believed to be seriously ill. The Townsend Thoresen ferry European Gateway was abandoned within 30 minutes of having a 200ft gash put in her side by the Speedlink Vanguard.

90s 1997 Newcastle United bosses were considering ambitious plans to expand beyond their new-look St James's Park super stadium. The Chronicle revealed the club was hoping to clinch a deal which would lead to commercial development behind the Gallowgate End of the ground.

00s 2001 TV star Liza Tarbuck handed her winnings from Who Wants To Be Millionaire to battered women in the North East. Liza took on host Chris Tarrant in a celebrity edition of the quiz show. The star donated her prize money to the Newcastle Women's Aid refuge.
