1970 A man went berserk with a gun today and for four hours terrorised men and women in an old folk's home. Shots injured two women and narrowly missed a group of screaming children at the siege of Glebe House, Southleigh, near Honiton, Devon.

1981 Police sealed off Scotswood Bridge this afternoon after a man threatened to jump from the top. Firemen were also called to the scene to help talk him down from the bridge 100ft above the river.

1992 A 12-year-old boy on remand staged a protest on a police station roof today - minutes before he was due in court. The schoolboy was appearing before magistrates at Whitley Bay when he gave his social worker escort the slip and managed to scramble through a window and on to the roof.

2003 Bakery giant Greggs today posted record profits of pounds 12.3m. The results cap another highly successful year for the stottie cake kings who created more than 1,000 new jobs through an ambitious expansion programme.
