TOASTMASTER REPORTS YEAR-END RESULTS

COLUMBIA, Mo., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Toastmaster Inc. (NYSE: TM), manufacturer of electrical consumer appliances and time pieces, today reported increased sales and earnings for 1992.
Year-end sales increased 7 percent from $152.8 million in 1991 to $163.5 million in 1992. Sales increased more than 11 percent from $45.4 million for the three months ended Dec. 31, 1991 to $50.6 million for the like period in 1992.
Net earnings for 1992 were $6.8 million, an increase of 2.8 percent over 1991, or 93 cents per share. Net earnings for 1991 were $6.6 million, or $1.11 per share. Net earnings for the three months ended Dec. 31, 1992 were $2.5 million or 33 cents per share, compared to 1991 net earnings of $2.8 million or 48 cents per share.
An extraordinary loss, net of income tax, of $0.6 million or 7 cents per share, was recognized during the third quarter from the early extinguishment of debt. This debt restructuring is expected to reduce future interest expense by approximately $0.6 million before taxes.
"We are very pleased with our year-end results," said Robert H. Deming, chairman of the board of directors. "Last year was one of the two best years we've ever had. Despite mild weather conditions, which reduced fan, heater and humidifier revenues by 11 percent from the previous year, we still increased sales and earnings. We have positioned ourselves strongly for the future."
Year-end revenues increased 20 percent in the time products category from $14.6 million in 1991 to $17.5 million in 1992. In addition, year-end revenues increased in the kitchen counter-top appliance category more than 6 percent from $128.5 million in 1991 to $137.1 million in 1992.
Toastmaster's increase in sales resulted partially from the introduction of the Grillerie(TM), a multi-function cooking appliance. Toastmaster increased 1992 advertising and support, especially for the Grillerie.
"We introduced several new products at the 1993 International Housewares Show including the Bread Box(TM), the Cool Edge Grill, a 14-speed blender, a citrus juicer, a food chopper and a coffee grinder," said Daniel J. Stubler, president and chief operating officer. "We believe these will have a positive impact on our future sales. We're also going to introduce another version of the Grillerie -- the Grillerie Basic(TM) -- which will create a lower- priced option for our customers."
Toastmaster's Grillerie Basic will have fewer accessories, and will be priced at less than $50. It is designed for more basic cooking needs. Stubler said giving the customers a choice will translate into more sales.
