TO THE TEST: corkscrews.

The Essential Wine Opener pounds 24.99, Argos (0870 600 1010)

ABSOLUTELY no strength required for this, but it seems bulky and needs to be left recharging so taking up valuable worktop space. Also, the mechanism does not eject synthetic corks, at which point you have to get your pliers out, making it less than useful.

Classic corkscrew, pounds 12, Brabantia (0870 240 7641, www.brabantia.co.uk)

YOU won't lose this funky red corkscrew in the kitchen drawer. The large plastic body makes this a bit cumbersome to use, but once the screw is in, the chunky handles make it easy enough to pull the cork out.

Deluxe Corkscrew, pounds 6.99, Culinare (0870 160 1319, www.culinare.com)

DIFFICULT to get started, as you need to remember to hold plastic "cuffs" down over the neck of the bottle. Ergonomic design and cork came out swiftly enough, but fiddly to retrieve from plastic body.

TM 100 Screwpull pounds 19.95, Divertimenti (0870 1295 026, www. divertimenti.co.uk)

GETTING the screw tip started in the cork took quite a few attempts. But screw mechanism smooth and cork screwed all the way up to the top - so no pulling strength required. Removing cork from screw took some effort.

Butterfly Corkscrew pounds 3.45, John Lewis (08456 049 049)

MECHANISM was straight and smooth, and cork slid out with a satisfying pop! Some effort required to remove cork from screw.

Easy Action Corkscrew pounds 9.99, Index (0870 264 4444, www.index.co.uk)

SMOOTH, easy action, for both screw going in and the cork coming out. Lovely delivery - no strength or effort required.

Square-topped butterfly corkscrew pounds 7.95, John Lewis (08456 049 049)

CLUNKY, squeaky screw mechanism. Easy enough pulling action for cork to come out, but the bulky plastic head made the cork hard to pull off the screw. However, it feels quite substantial and should stand up to years of use.

Pulltap's Corkscrew pounds 3.95, available from good wine merchants (www.pulltex.com)

SOME effort is required to wind the screw in, and the double lever system, that is this corkscrew's selling point, actually makes it fiddly to use, but the cork came out easily. Bit of strength required to pull the cork off.
