IN one of the more unlikely collaborations of the year, British sitcom legend Peter Bowles has sold his soul to punk by appearing in the new video by ageing Welsh anarchists Punks Not Dad.

The middle-aged misfits enticed the veteran actor to collaborate with them on new single, Monkey Boots.

Bowles, best known for sitcom roles in hit '70s and '80s shows To The Manor Born, Only When I Laugh and The Bounder, provides a voiceover on the record and introduces the video from his shed.

Having tackled sheds on In Me Shed and Ikea furniture on I Can't Get It Up in their previous YouTube hits, the Cardiff-based punkers turned their attention to footwear in their new song in the form of Monkey Boots, the iconic punk shoe.

"Monkey Boots were popular in the late '70s with those who couldn't afford Doc Martens," says guitarist Joe Strimmer. "Not many places sell them but now we're promoting them they'll be all the rage."

Set in an alley outside the school gates in 1981 the video for Monkey Boots is a West Side Story style turf war between Adam and the Ants' fans and the punky Monkey Boot Gang.

"We needed someone to add a bit of gravitas to proceedings," explains Punks Not Dad frontman Sid Life Crisis. "We needed someone to deliver a speech in praise of monkey boots, we needed someone with panache. Peter Bowles was that man.

For Bowles himself it was an opportunity to fulfil a long held ambition - well sort of.

"I've always wanted to be a rock 'n' roll singer since I saw Elvis in America when he was 21 and I realised I was in the wrong profession," he explained.

"Now I'm into second childhood I wanted to form a band called Punks Not Grandad, then I discovered this band on the internet called Punks Not Dad who were tremendously witty and had a devastatingly attractive female in their ranks called Lisa Rogers.

"It was a privilege to be in the video for Punks Not Dad because they are very witty. I loved their humour. They are my heroes. Now, about that brown envelope... " Punks Not Dad will launch the single and video at The Moon Club, Cardiff on Friday, July 6.
