TO STOP ROBBERIES AGAINST POSTAL DRIVERS ARMORED VEHICLES TO CARRY POSTAL FUNDS

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to stop the armed robbery of its drivers, the Los Angeles Post Office has signed a contract with Federal Armored Express to pick up postal receipts from Los Angeles' 60 post offices.
The contract was prompted by a more than 122 percent increase of robberies perpetrated against postal drivers from fiscal year 1992 to 1993. In 1992 there were 41 robberies, in 1993 there were 91.
FAE dispatches seven armored vehicles six days a week to pick up postal receipts. Postal retail units are closed on Sunday.
Before the agreement with FAE, postal motor vehicle services drivers transported postal funds during their regular routes.
The contract became effective Oct. 12. "While this is a temporary contract this will be the norm in Los Angeles," says Clarence Lewis Jr., Los Angeles Processing & Distribution Center plant manager, who is responsible for Los Angeles's 190 MVS drivers. "Postal drivers do not transport postal funds now and will not transport postal funds in the future in Los Angeles. Armored carriers will be the norm, because we're talking about lives here and the safety of our employees is the No. 1 priority."
The penalty for armed robbery of a postal employee can be up to 10 years in prison. If the postal employee is injured the fine can be 25 years up to life imprisonment.
Lewis said that $10,000 rewards are available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who commit crimes against postal employees.
If someone witnesses the robbery of a postal employee or any other postal related crime they can call postal inspectors at 818-405-1200, 24 hours a day. "It's important that we have good witnesses, even if they prefer to remain anonymous," says Postal Inspector Pamela Prince.
FAE is based in Baltimore, and operates nationwide. Its regional headquarters office is located in Los Angeles.
