TMI/EXCEL INTRODUCES ADAPTER FOR AUTO TEST OF FLASH MEMORY

IRVINE, Calif., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Technology Marketing Inc./EXCEL (NASDAQ: TMKT) today introduced a PCMCIA Test Head Adapter for use with the EXCEL 1000 memory tester for high performance testing of flash card memory devices.
The new adapter provides low-cost, high-performance automatic checkout of PCMCIA Type 1 (68-pin) packaged flash memories used in today's advanced laptop and notebook computers from leading manufacturers such as AST Research, Dell Computer, IBM, NEC, Toshiba and others. Flash memory is a chip that holds its data contents without power being applied and may be erased in zones, according to Carlos Zamora, TMI/EXCEL director of Product Support.
"The term `flash' memory was originally coined by Toshiba, and it came from the chip's ability to be erased in a flash," Zamora said. "It is similar to electrically erasable, programmable read only memory (EEPROM) but is less expensive and provides higher bit densities more easily. It requires unique test procedures, however, and this addition to our EXCEL 1000 system is ideal for both engineering and production users because it requires no specialized training. It uses industry- standard data, address and disturb tests for accurate and reliable testing of flash memory under conditions that simulate the actual environment in which they are used."
TMI/EXCEL offers more than 80 adapters for use with the EXCEL 1000 unit to exercise a wide variety of memory chips, boards, cards and modules used in a range of memory applications. Users can switch adapters in minutes to switch from testing one memory device to another. The advanced EXCEL system runs comprehensive batteries of test patterns in both engineering and production modes for real-time testing -- including data, address, refresh, march, floating 1s and 0s, adjacent row/column and moving inversion -- to make sure that every memory device performs to the manufacturer's specifications.
"This new adapter simplifies testing of these unique devices because all test sequences are performed using menu-driven software prompts," Zamora added. "The test system can be enhanced for use with future flash memory designs as well. The industry is headed toward flash memory chips that will provide for less than whole-chip erasure, such as byte-by-byte erasure, which means these devices could someday provide an alternative to current random access memory (RAM) chips."
The new EXCEL 100 PCMCIA Test Adapter option is list priced at $1,650. It is available immediately for 30-day deliveries ARO.
