TJ INTERNATIONAL JOINT VENTURE SUBSIDIARY SECURES COMMITMENT FOR NEW PLANT SITE

BOISE, Idaho, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- TJ International (NASDAQ: TJCO) today announced that its Trus Joist MacMillan joint venture subsidiary has secured the commitment of the State of Kentucky to assist in providing 100 acres of land in Eastern Kentucky for use as the site for its second TimberStrand(TM) laminated strand lumber (LSL) facility. Although the project has not yet received final board of directors approval nor is it currently on a definitive timetable, the company intends to begin site-specific engineering and the governmental approval process. If all goes as planned, the facility, which might cost as much as $100 million and employ 120 people, would be put on a firm timetable late this summer and become operational in early 1995. The company is also doing preliminary planning for a third plant at a yet to be announced location.
TimberStrand(TM) LSL is still a developmental, proprietary engineered lumber technology. It utilizes long strands of wood produced from low-cost pulp wood tree species such as aspen and poplar. The technology is currently being developed and introduced to the residential construction and specialty millwork markets from the company's first TimberStrand LSL facility located in Deerwood, Minn. This facility, which began initial production in late 1991, is still losing money and continues to experience start-up problems. However, progress is being made and the technology offers sufficient promise that the company believes it appropriate to begin preliminary work on additional facilities.
The company emphasized, however, that the decision to exercise its option on the property in Kentucky, and then to proceed with construction, would depend on satisfying several contingencies. These include an improvement in the TimberStrand LSL manufacturing process so that TimberStrand LSL products consistently meet high strength structural product engineering specifications, a material reduction in product costs at the company's Deerwood facility, and a determination that increased TimberStrand LSL production capacity is financially feasible in light of anticipated market conditions and the company's liquidity and capital resources.
According to TJ International President and Chief Executive Officer Walt Minnick, "No other company currently produces laminated strand lumber, a

technology that holds the promise of manufacturing high- quality lumber from low-cost, abundant tree species. If we succeed in its development and introduction to the marketplace, it will represent a significant competitive advantage for our joint venture."
TJ International, a Boise-based specialty building products company, is the majority owner and managing partner of Trus Joist MacMillan, a structural composite lumber joint venture with MacMillan Bloedel (NASDAQ: MMBLF). TJ International also manufactures and markets windows through its Dashwood, Laflamme and Norco subsidiaries.
