TJ INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES PLANT REOPENING

BOISE, Idaho, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- TJ International (NASDAQ: TJCO) announced today that its Trus Joist MacMillan joint venture subsidiary is reopening a MICRO=LAM(R) laminated veneer lumber manufacturing facility at Stayton, Ore. The plant, which was mothballed in December of 1991 in response to a weak construction market, will begin production immediately.
"Demand for our engineered lumber products is outpacing the modest housing recovery," said Trus Joist MacMillan Chief Executive Officer and President Tom Denig. "We feel confident the market conditions and improved raw material availability warrant reopening the Stayton plant on a long-term basis." Trus Joist MacMillan's engineered lumber products use the wood of small-diameter, abundant trees to make high- quality structural building products previously milled only from the wood of old-growth trees.
The Stayton facility will immediately employ one of its four laminated veneer lumber manufacturing presses, said Plant Manager Bob McFarland. He anticipates bringing a second press on-line in early May. McFarland says a companion manufacturing operation for TJI(R) wood I-joists, which continued on an uninterrupted basis throughout the course of the housing recession, has also been recently expanded with the addition of two new shifts. As a result of the expanded operations, he says employment at the facility will be increased from 80 to 125 people.
TJ International is the 51-percent owner and managing partner of Trus Joist MacMillan, while MacMillan Bloedel (NASDAQ: MMBLF) of Vancouver, British Columbia, owns the other 49 percent. TJ International also owns three window companies across North America, including Norco Windows in the United States, and Dashwood Industries and Laflamme & Frere in Canada.
