 TIMKEN BOARD OF DIRECTORS STRENGTHENS COMPANY LEADERSHIP
 CANTON, Ohio, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At its meeting today, The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) board of directors elected Joseph F. Toot, Jr., chief executive officer of The Timken Company. Toot also will continue to serve as president.
 During the same meeting, the board elected two officers to newly created positions. Peter J. Ashton was elected president - bearings and Charles H. West was elected president - steel. Both Ashton and West will continue as executive vice presidents of the company.
 Chairman W.R. Timken, Jr. noted that for several years Toot had been sharing CEO duties with him. "To reach our objectives, it is important that The Timken Company be guided by a clearly designated leader. Joe Toot's long experience and capabilities make him that person," said Mr. Timken. "My own role as chairman, representing shareholders as well as the company will remain undiminished."
 "The elections of Peter Ashton and Chuck West will strengthen appreciably our company, and the respective businesses they lead, " said Toot. "They substantially increase our business unit focus and reflect the growth in their responsibilities."
 Toot joined the company in 1962 in its manufacturing operations. After a decade of work in the company's international operations, he was elected vice president - international operations in 1967. He was elected a director of the company and named a member of the executive committee in 1968. He was elected president of The Timken Company in 1979. Toot is a graduate of Princeton University and earned a master of business administration degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
 Ashton's career with The Timken Company spans a 40-year career in manufacturing positions around the world. In 1980, he was elected vice president - international operations. He was elected vice president - bearing operations and became a director of the company in 1983. He assumed his most current position, executive vice president - bearings, in 1986. A native of Wolverhampton, England, and a chartered engineer in England, Ashton is a graduate of Wolverhampton College of Technology and served as an officer with the Royal Air Force. He also attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
 West joined the company in 1954 as a mechanical engineer trainee and subsequently held a variety of engineering and research positions. In 1979, he became director - research and was elected vice president - engineering and research in 1982. He was named to the board of directors in 1984. Since 1986, he has held the position of executive vice president - steel. West holds a bachelor's degree from Tri-State University and completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
