TIMELY TAX TIPS FOR PEOPLE ON THE MOVE

WEST WARWICK, R.I., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- If you're one of the 46 million Americans that moved from one household or apartment to another last year, you may be entitled to some tax relief, according to one of the nation's leading household goods carriers, Paul Arpin Van Lines.
If your move was job-related, many expenses may be deductible. To determine eligibility, calculate the mileage from your old house to your new job. From this figure, subtract the distance from your old house to your old job. If the difference is at least 35 miles, many expenditures related to your move can be deducted from your income, for example:
Renters: The cost of breaking a lease, and cost of securing a
 new one.
Homeowners: Advertising costs, real estate listing fees, bank
fees, state transfer taxes, stamps and legal fees
associated with the sale and purchase of your home.
Both: Travel, lodging, tolls, and meals incurred during
search for a new residence. Also, actual moving
expenses, including van lines and packing materials.
These expense should be listed as itemized deductions on Schedule A of the federal income tax return, and used at arriving at your federal taxable income. When it comes to itemizing, be sure to keep adequate records of your move so that you can deduct as much as possible. For questions, consumers can refer to IRS publication 521 -- Moving Expenses and 523 -- Selling Your Home.
"With the federal tax law in constant flux, we advise our customers to consult with an accountant or tax expert to determine exactly how much they can claim," said John Leistritz, vice president of marketing, Paul Arpin Van Lines. "Many consumers will be relieved to learn that the cost of their move may be partially offset by these deductions."
With 1992 corporate gross revenues of more than $72 million, Paul Arpin Van Lines is one of the nation's leading household goods carriers. Arpin and its international division, Arpin International Group, are represented by more than 600 agents in the United States and nearly 150 foreign nations. Paul Arpin Van Lines is the official mover of the National Football League, and had been rated first in overall customer satisfaction by the readers of the nation's leading consumer information publication.
