 WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Inc.

(NYSE: TWX) today officially launched the multimedia Songs of My People project, an historic photography book and film event about African- American contributions to American culture.
The project is comprised of a book and an international exhibition which will open today at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and travel nationally under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). In addition, Songs of My People will be an HBO special.
In announcing the collaborative Songs of My People project, Time Warner Chairman and Co-CEO Steven J. Ross and President and Co-CEO N.J. Nicholas Jr., said: "Time Warner is proud to be part of Songs of My People, an American cultural event. As the world's leading media and entertainment company, we recognize the need to present realistic images of the African-American community. We hope, through the power of communication, Songs of My People will show all Americans what we have in common and will foster increased understanding of the unique contributions of African-Americans."
During the summer and fall of 1990, over 50 of the nation's leading African-American photojournalists were assigned to capture the diversity of the Black experience across the nation on film. They photographed those who had achieved success beyond their dreams and others who struggle for survival from day to day. Songs of My People is a loving, sensitive, critical and hopeful "self-portrait" of the African-American community through its own eyes. Songs of My People celebrates this community and its impact on the American experience, and illustrates the diversity of African-American heritage in music, art, spirituality, fashion, politics, sports, entertainment, community and family life.
The book Songs of My People is being published by Little, Brown and Company on Feb. 12, 1992. The book and exhibition were conceived by Eric Easter, D. Michael Cheers and Dudley M. Brooks, who formed New African Visions, Inc., a not-for-profit organization committed to providing a balanced view of the African-American community through the visual arts.
The exhibition Songs of My People consists of 150 photographs. The exhibition is organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Time Warner will donate photos from the exhibition to the permanent collection of the museums exhibiting Songs of My People. The exhibit will travel nationally to 22 cities under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service. The international tour, which will travel to seven European countries, will be managed by Harrison Parrott of London. The exhibit will be on display at London's Royal Festival Hall from Thursday, Sept. 10, 1992, to Sunday, Oct. 25, 1992.
The exhibition is in honor of former Time Warner Co-Chairman and CEO J. Richard Munro, a longtime proponent of equal opportunity for women and minorities who has been a leader in the struggle for literacy and educational equality.
An HBO special inspired by Songs, co-produced by Quincy Jones Entertainment, Blackside, Inc. and Home Box Office, Time Warner's pay-TV subsidiary, is in development.
This evening, hundreds of dignitaries and celebrities will gather at a Gala Reception at the Corcoran to celebrate the project.
