TIME WARNER INTERACTIVE GROUP AND APPLE ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE TO MOVE INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA TO HOME ENTERTAINMENT MARKET

BURBANK, Calif., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Interactive Group (formerly Warner New Media), a division of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX), and Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced an agreement to bring interactive multimedia out of the computer industry and into the home entertainment market.
Apple's PIE (Personal Interactive Electronics) group will offer at the retail level a full line of CD-ROM software from Time Warner Interactive Group (TWIG) alongside Apple's hardware products including Power CD and Newton.
"We expect this alliance to have a positive impact on the consumer's ability to choose among an even wider array of entertainment and education software," said Craig Moody, executive vice president of TWIG. "Apple and TWIG have set a trend which retailers and consumers embrace because CD-ROM hardware and quality software are now available at a single point of purchase."
Apple will distribute both Macintosh and MPC products developed by TWIG.
Under the terms of the three-year alliance, Apple will represent to its direct sales force and to approximately 2,000 retail outlets the entire library of CD-ROM software products developed by Time Warner Interactive Group.
Additionally, Apple will offer TWIG's CD-ROM product line to the higher education (K-12) market and the general business market. Collectively, TWIG and Apple will develop marketing programs for worldwide retail and consumer markets.
This latest alliance follows last week's announcement of an agreement with EduQuest, an IBM company, and TWIG to co-develop DOS CD-ROM products. TWIG also announced today a strategic alliance with the Russian Space Research Institute and The Planetary Society to produce "Visions of Mars" on CD-ROM which will travel aboard the "Mars 94" spaceship and be the first such product to land on the surface of Mars.
