TIME WARNER CABLE SELECTS SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA'S ADVANCED DISTRIBUTION AND FIBER OPTIC EQUIPMENT FOR FULL SERVICE NETWORK

ATLANTA, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Cable has ordered advanced distribution and fiber optic equipment from Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) for its highly advanced, interactive Full Service Network (FSN) in suburban Orlando.
Time Warner Cable announced plans in late January to transform its cable systems into 21st century FSNs. The first step is to build an "electronic superhighway" that will provide a wide array of switched digital services to an area of 10,000 homes in suburban Orlando early next year.
The FSN, with its fiber rich architecture, will deploy fiber to pockets of 400 homes and will support any type of on-demand digital programming including movies on demand and other services such as personal communications services, video phone and computer networking.
To accommodate the need for an expanded high-bandwidth return path -- 900 MHz to 1 GHz -- that will allow interactivity, telephony and other services, Scientific-Atlanta will provide Time Warner with specialized RF distribution and AM fiber equipment. This will consist of a high-band return version of the System Amplifier II (SA II) and System 60 fiber electronics for the FSN.
The standard SA II offers several new features which make it easy to install, upgrade and service. At the heart of the SA II is an upgradeable and easily replaceable integrated amplifier unit which eliminates the need for multiple modules and interconnections. This unitized module is inserted in a new improved 1.5 GHz housing design.
The System 60 AM fiber system includes status monitoring and automatic switching capabilities. High-frequency reverse data transmitters will be located in the node for FSN operation.
"Time Warner Cable continues to push the envelope of higher bandwidth for delivery of a wide variety of new and interactive services. We are eager to join with them to create a Full Service Network that will have expanded benefits for Time Warner and its subscribers for many years to come," said Robert McIntyre, president of the Transmission Systems Division in Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband Communications Group.
Time Warner Cable is the nation's second-largest cable television operator, serving 7.1 million TV homes in 36 states. It is a unit of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
