TIME WARNER CABLE OF HOUSTON ORDERS $16 MILLION IN FIBER AND DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT FROM SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA FOR UPGRADE

ATLANTA, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Cable of Houston has ordered $16 million in Scientific-Atlanta, Inc.'s (NYSE: SFA) most advanced fiber and distribution equipment to be used in upgrading its 5,000-mile plant to 550 MHz with a foundation for further expansion to 1 GHz.
To add channel capacity and improve reliability and signal quality, Time Warner is ordering advanced Scientific-Atlanta products including Dual Wavelength AM Supertrunks, System Amplifier IIs and Line Extender IIs.
Upon completion of the project, the Time Warner Houston system will have 1,000 AM fiber nodes.
"After careful study, we determined that Scientific-Atlanta offered the best equipment at the best value for us to improve our system to better serve subscribers," said Robert V. Moel, vice president-technical operations for Time Warner of Houston.
The city of Houston recently awarded Time Warner of Houston a renewal of its franchise, extending it for another 15 years.
"We are extremely pleased that Time Warner has chosen some of our most advanced technology for its Houston upgrade," said Jay Levergood, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband Communications Group. "This order and increasing interest from other MSOs show that these products fill an important requirement for many operators."
Scientific-Atlanta's Dual Wavelength AM Supertrunk is designed to provide superior performances and allow cable operators to use less fiber than most other technologies, thus producing significant cost savings.
Scientific-Atlanta pioneered AM supertrunking when it introduced a 1310 nanometer AM Supertrunk in early 1991. With the Dual Wavelength AM Supertrunk, Scientific-Atlanta has developed the first commercial application of 1550 nanometer wavelength for supertrunks.
Also included in Time Warner's order are units of the System Amplifier II (SA II) from Scientific-Atlanta which was introduced in late 1992 and offers several new features which make it easy to install, upgrade and service. At the heart of the SA II is an upgradeable and easily replaceable integrated amplifier unit which eliminates the need for multiple modules and interconnections.
This unitized module is inserted in a new, improved housing design that serves as a platform for future upgrades to 1 GHz.
Scientific-Atlanta's Line Extender II (LE II), also included in this order, features a high efficiency, transformerless power supply that offers significantly lower power bills for operators. Also, the LE II offers an optional Automatic Gain Control (AGC) which is cost-efficient and allows the cascading of line extenders beyond the traditional two or three.
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. is a world leader in broadband communications systems, cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
