TIMBERS ELECTED PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
 OF KEMPER CORPORATION
LONG GROVE, Ill., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- David B. Mathis, chairman and chief executive officer of Kemper Corporation (NYSE: KEM), announced today that its board of directors elected Stephen B. Timbers president and chief operating officer of the $15 billion financial services company.
The election is effective immediately. Mathis had held these offices since he became chairman and chief executive officer on Feb. 1.
"As chief investment officer of Kemper Corporation and Kemper Financial Services, Steve has played an integral role in shaping the strategic direction of our company," Mathis said. "Our backgrounds complement each other, which will be beneficial as Kemper focuses on its mission of gathering, managing and protecting assets."
"I look forward to working with Dave and the heads of our operating units to help make Kemper a sharply focused, highly profitable entity today and in the future," Timbers said. Timbers, 48, joined Kemper Financial Services as chief investment officer in 1987 and was named chief investment officer of Kemper Corporation in 1991, titles he will retain. Timbers was elected to the Kemper Corporation board in May 1992.
From 1984 to 1987, he was executive vice president and chief investment officer of the Portfolio Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Chemical New York Corporation. He served as senior portfolio manager at Smith Barney Harris Upham and Company from 1981 to 1984. Previously, he was portfolio strategist and director of research for common stock investments for Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York.
Timbers holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
Kemper Corporation is a nonoperating holding company with subsidiaries in asset management, securities brokerage, life insurance, reinsurance, property-casualty insurance and risk management.
