TIE/COMMUNICATIONS SIGNS AGREEMENT TO MARKET COMPRESSION LABS' NEW VIDEOCONFERENCING SYSTEM

SEYMOUR, Conn., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- TIE/communications, Inc. (AMEX: TIE), a major North American supplier of business communication systems, services and software, today announced that it has signed an agreement to market, service and maintain Compression Labs, Inc.'s ("CLI") (NASDAQ-NMS: CLIX) innovative videoconferencing systems in the United States and Canada. Under the contract terms, TIE is a non- exclusive reseller that can sell CLI's entire line of videoconferencing products. Initially, TIE will concentrate its efforts on CLI's new "eclipse" small group system, which is the first complete, full-featured videoconferencing system priced at less than $20,000.
"Our marketing mission is to expand TIE's ability to provide its customers with a complete line of business communications products, services and solutions. Now, the advantages and cost savings of videoconferencing can be brought to a whole new class of users allowing companies to change the way they do business, which is an important operating cost issue in light of proposed tax law changes for business travel," said George N. Benjamin, TIE's president and CEO. "Our partnership with CLI puts us into a new technology that gives us a portfolio of full featured, high-quality videoconferencing products at breakthrough prices and unprecedented user-simplicity."
Referring to TIE's customer base, extensive knowledge of the business communications marketplace, and its nationwide customer support centers, John E. Tyson, president, CEO and chairman of CLI, said, "We are enthusiastic about the marketing potential of our partnership with TIE. We believe that it presents us with a rapid, high growth opportunity. It allows CLI to gain instant access to an established, nationwide customer base with a business partner that is serious-minded and dedicated to the success of our videoconferencing product line."
Benjamin pointed out that TIE is building a dedicated staff of sales representatives, technicians and customer-service personnel who will be trained by CLI to sell and maintain the eclipse videoconferencing product line. "We purchased 16 eclipse systems to equip several TIE offices," explained Benjamin. "The equipment will be used to conduct comprehensive training programs, as an information exchange for TIE employees and for customer demonstrations. We want to contribute to the video communications revolution of the '90s. Along with CLI, we're seriously committed to its success."
 eclipse
eclipse is the first complete, full-featured videoconferencing system priced in the same range as copiers and workstations. The eclipse product line also marks a breakthrough in ease of use, installation and service. Shipped fully assembled, eclipse can be installed in minutes -- even by a nontechnical person -- simply by plugging in two cables. In addition, a wireless remote control unit and graphical user interface make the system as easy to operate as a television, and make a video call as easy as dialing a telephone.
According to independent industry analysts, the eclipse is a feature-rich videoconferencing system that sells for 50 to 70 percent less than its nearest competitor without sacrificing performance.
Based in San Jose, Calif., CLI is a leader in the emerging Compressed Digital Video ("CDV"(TM)) communications arena. CLI has developed and marketed CDV-based video communication systems to business, education and government organizations throughout the world. In addition to videoconferencing, CLI has leveraged its CDV technology across a spectrum of new communications applications such as broadcast television, personal video and HDTV.
TIE/communications, Inc. operates 68 TIE Systems, Inc. offices in the United States and Canada. TIE has an installed base of 11 million telephones, making it one of the largest communications organizations in North America.
TIE is a member of The Marmon Group of companies, an international association of more than 60 autonomous manufacturing and service companies with annual sales in excess of $4 billion.
