TIE/COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE; COMPANIES AGREE TO MARKET CALL CENTER SYSTEMS NATIONWIDE

SEYMOUR, Conn., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- TIE/communications, Inc. (AMEX: TIE), a major North American supplier of business communication systems, services and software, today announced it has entered into a strategic alliance with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) (NYSE: DEC) to distribute Digital's "next generation" computer- integrated telephony system, CallCenterPLUS. The alliance calls for TIE to incorporate CallCenterPLUS technology and capabilities into selected communications systems in its product line and to offer CallCenterPLUS upgrades to TIE's existing customers.
Pointing to TIE's customer base, extensive knowledge of the business communications marketplace, PBX hardware and its nationwide customer support centers, the company's president and CEO, George Benjamin, views the alliance as a dynamic synergy between the two companies. "One of the main reasons that TIE has decided to enter into a strategic alliance with Digital is Digital's outstanding software that integrates with any and all data systems. An additional pay-off of our alliance is a higher level of customer satisfaction and service," Benjamin said. "Digital is an innovative corporation with cutting-edge technology that makes them a perfect fit with our systems, software and approach to service. Our large- installed customer base, numerous service/sales centers and PBX hardware make TIE a dynamic force in the business communications marketplace. Together with Digital, we will provide cost efficient, individual business communications solutions that key into the power and flexibility of integrated telephone/computer systems."
Carl R. Strathmeyer, Digital's marketing director for CallCenterPLUS, emphasized that this alliance will provide attractive options for the partners' mutual customers. "Making effective use of computer-telephone integration requires expertise in both data and voice technologies, as well as a no-nonsense, benefits-oriented approach," explained Strathmeyer. "TIE has shown us that they have the experience and commitment to fill this role for their customers, and we are pleased to welcome them into the CallCenterPLUS family."
 Computer Integrated Telephony
The main component in CallCenterPLUS is Digital's new Computer Integrated Telephony (CIT) technology. "In many traditional call centers," said Strathmeyer, "the telephone and computer systems remain separate, and for the most part unconnected, entities. Digital's CIT technology links phone systems, voice switches and computer systems into a unified, open business communications system that improves customer service levels and call center efficiency."
 CallCenterPLUS At Work
"The applications and business activities of CallCenterPLUS are boundless," cited Benjamin, "Whether it is a bank that needs to handle inbound/outbound transactions; a retailer that needs to manage call volumes; an insurance brokerage that accesses customer profiles/histories; a telemarketing organization that queries multiple databases; or a financial services company that compiles statistical reports, CallCenterPLUS performs a cluster of integrated telephony and computer activities. And, the system can be configured to fulfill the customer's individualized communications requirements."
Based in Maynard, Mass., Digital Equipment Corporation is a leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services.
TIE/communications, Inc., serves small and medium-sized business customers and operates 68 TIE Systems, Inc., offices in the United States and Canada. TIE has an installed base of 11 million telephones, making it one of the largest communications organizations in North America.
