THREE OLH 8TH GRADERS WIN 2ND PLACE IN THE NATIONAL SIFMA STOCK MARKET GAME.

Byline: Colleen Kurtzhalts

OLH's 8th grade team of Jayleen Caraballo, Titi Santiago, and Vivyana Silva took 2nd place overall in the SIFMA Stock Market Game! This is the second year in a row OLH students have placed 2nd in The Stock Market Game

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) is a United States industry trade group representing securities firms, banks, and asset management companies.

The SIFMA Foundation's acclaimed The Stock Market Game program is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students in grades 4-12 in the world of economics, investing and personal finance, and prepares them for financially independent futures. More than 600,000 students take part every school year across all 50 states. The Stock Market Game has reached 17 million students since its inception in 1977.

This is the third year that OLH 8th graders entered into the Stock Market Game, placing 2nd place overall in 2018 and 2019. Computer and Technology teacher Mrs. Colleen Kurtzhalts groups students into teams of 3 students each, where they assume roles as Head Research Director, Portfolio Coordinator and Data Entry Coordinator. Students have a fictitious $1,000,000 to invest for 3 months to see which team has the highest rate of return. The teams spent two class periods researching and learning about stocks before students make their pretend purchase. Students were allowed to buy and sell as often as they wish during the 3 months. Our 2nd place winner's rate of return was 22.20%!

In the Northwest Suburban game, 756 teams of over 13,000 students participated. Congratulations again to Jayleen Caraballo, Titi Santiago, and Vivyana Silva for placing 2nd overall!
