 Raise Awareness of PC Viruses
CUPERTINO, Calif., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today reported that more than 250,000 personal computer users worldwide received free copies of the Michelangelo edition of the Norton AntiVirus to detect and eliminate the Michelangelo virus. Working in cooperation with leading industry publications, national software distributors, local resellers and national bulletin board services, the special Michelangelo edition software was made available to computer users on Feb. 19 as part of the company's recent public service campaign. The Michelangelo virus, which activates annually on March 6, the birthday of Michelangelo, overwrites the hard disk drive contents of IBM PCs and compatibles, resulting in complete loss of computer data.
"Our goal with the Michelangelo program was to provide protection for all personal computer users from the threat of the Michelangelo virus," said Rod Turner, executive vice president of Symantec's Peter Norton Group. "As a company whose customers number in the millions, we feel it's our duty to help keep all computer users safe from threats like this one."
The public service campaign resulted in more than 50,000 calls to the company from users seeking information about the Michelangelo virus and how to protect themselves. More than 250,000 copies of the Michelangelo edition were distributed via bulletin boards and software distributors and resellers. Symantec also placed public service announcements on radio stations and in print throughout the country discussing other alternatives to help users protect their data.
"A lot of users were very anxious about their data due to the Michelangelo virus and lack of information they had about it," said Turner. "Our technical support and customer service people, as well as others who helped us distribute information, did a great job in alleviating their anxiety and providing data and solutions to thousands of people."
