THOUGHT for the DAY.
A WEEKEND newspaper supplement recently published extracts from a book by a writer who tried to live the ultimate Biblical life. He prepared by spending five hours a day for four weeks reading the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation, searching for every rule and suggestion, resulting in 72 pages of guidelines for everyday living.
He then spent a year avoiding: certain foods; certain clothes; cutting his hair; contact with women (including his wife) at certain times, and working on the Sabbath. He also tried not to lie, covet, be lustful, etc. At the end of the year, he says he is still agnostic.
Jesus did not live by the letter of the law. Luke 13:10-16 and Matthew 12:1-13 tell of Jesus healing on the Sabbath, much to the outrage of the synagogue rulers and Pharisees, who then plotted how they might kill Jesus.
In 2 Corinthians 3:1-6, Paul speaks of "a new covenant, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts - for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."
If we read the Bible, let us search for the spirit of love.
