THOSE GENTLE LITTLE CRITTERS WITH WHITE STRIPES CAN RUIN YOUR DAY (OR NIGHT) EVEN FROM 15 FEET AWAY

PENFIELD, N.Y., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- This spring's late, heavy snows and cold rains probably will keep this year's new skunk families in their dens longer than usual. This is not necessarily good news because, when they do emerge (protective mothers with four to six skunklets in tow, all armed and ready to shoot) they'll be hungrier and more aggressiveA?nd, with an effective range of up to 15 feet, skunks take a lot of leaving alone.
Gary Reed, president of the Thornell Corporation of Penfield, N.Y., which manufactures Skunk-Off(R), the leading skunk odor eliminator, has studied skunks for more than a dozen years.
"These are fascinating little animals," Reed says. "They're of the mustelid family, which is found all over the world, and includes ferrets, weasels, martens, wolverines, badgers, otters and the European pole cat. The American skunk and its African cousin, the zoril, are unique in that they are the only animals that can deliberately contract the muscles around their scent glands to shoot their contents with pinpoint accuracy up to 15 feet; and they're repeaters: they can shoot again and again.
"Through research," Reed continued, "we found a nontoxic, biodegradable antidote to the mercaptan oil, the primary component of skunk spray.
"Actually, it's not a spray. It's a narrow, powerful stream that will stop potential enemies in their tracks with a direct hit, and is so strong it can warn them off from as much as a mile away.
"However, this defense doesn't work on the skunk's only two 'natural' enemies. One is the great horned owl which has no sense of smell, and finds skunks very tasty. The other is the automobile that the fearless skunk doesn't recognize as an enemy - usually a fatal mistake. But the skunk's revenge, if left untreated, will leave your car totally immune to thieves for weeks.
"There is only one dependable treatment for skunk odor," Reed said, "and it's not tomato juice or shampoo. These only spread the mercaptan oil in a thin film all over your pet. Skunk-Off not only changes the odor molecule through bonding, absorption and conteraction, but also prevents its recurrence. While it's a very complex chemistry, it works every time. That's why over 75 percent of the veterinary practices in the U.S. and Canada use and dispense it."
