THORNDIKE DELAND ASSOCIATES: GLOBALLY ORIENTED EXECUTIVES HARD TO FIND

NEW YORK, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. executives with bona fide global credentials are hard to find, according to Bill Bryan, vice president of New York executive search firm Thorndike Deland Associates. "Despite their overseas experience, any of the senior people we consider for international marketing or operations positions are not truly globally oriented," said Bryan.
According to the search consultant, the "international divisions" of many, if not most, U.S. firms continue to be export-driven, rather than globally oriented or transnational. "Since so many major companies still aren't structured as global organizations, it's not surprising the people coming out of them aren't either."
In today's global recruiting, Bryan sees several trends:
--Preferred experience is with organizations where decision making has been genuinely global or transnational, not just with companies that have different businesses in different countries.
--Global marketers are sought who have not been deskbound but who have circulated in the marketplace, especially those who have taken on international assignments early in their careers and view challenges from both a local and global perspective.
--National origin is now more incidental, where at one time it was often a decisive factor.
--Concurrently, "foreign" language skills are less needed, since the language of global marketing is increasingly English.
While these may be minor trends in themselves, Bryan observed, they reflect how many companies are restructuring in order to function more effectively in today's worldwide business economy. "In a growing number of companies, the old 'international' division is becoming less a corporate ghetto," said Bryan, "and more a fulcrum of change and opportunity."
