THOMAN JOINS RJR NABISCO TO HEAD INTERNATIONAL FOOD OPERATIONS
NEW YORK, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. today announced that G. Richard Thoman, formerly president and chief executive officer of American Express International and co-chief executive of American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc., has joined the company as president of Nabisco International Inc., in charge of the company's international food operations.
Thoman, 48, has been acting as a consultant to the company. He will assume his new duties in September, reporting to RJR Nabisco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Louis V. Gerstner Jr.
According to Gerstner, Thoman's appointment reflects the company's emphasis on aggressive growth in the food business outside of the North American markets. The international food business previously had been one of seven operating units at Nabisco Foods Group.
"Over the past year we have taken a number of steps positioning RJR Nabisco to aggressively pursue new growth opportunities in both the food and tobacco businesses," Gerstner said. "By recruiting an executive of Rick Thoman's caliber to run our international food businesses, we're underscoring this company's commitment in the international food arena. We are very excited about the many new opportunities abroad that are emerging as a result of the political and economic map being virtually redrawn over the past two years."
As co-CEO of American Express Travel Related Services Company and CEO of American Express International from 1989 to 1992, Thoman was responsible for all American Express card, travel and banking activities outside North America. He was president of American Express Travel Related Services International from 1985 to 1989. He joined American Express in 1979 as chief financial and administrative officer of the travel division.
Thoman was a senior associate with McKinsey and Company from 1972 to 1979, where he worked in the financial and banking practice areas, managing projects in the United States and Western Europe.
Thoman graduated from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University with a Ph.D. in international economics, and master's degrees in international economics and international studies. He also holds a B.A. in economics and political sciences from McGill University and a master's degree in international economics from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.
RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. is the indirect parent of RJR Nabisco, Inc., an international consumer products company. RJR Nabisco's other major operating units are R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International, Inc., and the Nabisco Foods Group.
