THIS WEEK IN 1978.

In the charts BONEY M with Mary's Boy Child was at number one in 1978. The song would be a massive Christmas hit.

Moving up were The Village People with YMCA, Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip with I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper, and Chic with Le Freak. New entries included Racey with Lay Your Love On Me, and John Travolta with Greased Lightning.

Number 1 album THE Original Soundtrack to the movie Grease was still at the pinnacle of the album charts.

Two of the players who recorded on the Grease soundtrack were members of the band Toto. One of these, David Hungate, also performed on Olivia Newton-John's album Totally Hot with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. Other musicians on Grease had previously worked with Elton John, Steely Dan and the Bee Gees.

At the movies THE American comedy film California Suite was released this week.

The movie relates the misadventures of four groups of guests at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Starring Jane Fonda, Alan Alda and Maggie Smith, the film was shot on location at The Beverly Hills Hotel, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and on Rodeo Drive.

In the news DIANNE Feinstein succeeds the murdered George Moscone, to become the first woman mayor of San Francisco, California.

THE Spanish Constitution officially restores the country's democratic government.

NELLY Furtado, Canadian-born singer and songwriter is born.

World of sport THE 8th Asian Games were held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Originally, the host city was due to be Singapore but it dropped its plan to host the games due to financial problems. Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, was then chosen to be host. But Islamabad also dropped its plans, due to conflicts with Bangladesh and India.
