THIRD-QUARTER TOURISM UP 1 PERCENT IN MICHIGAN

DETROIT, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Tourism Index compiled by Comerica Bank posted a 1-percent gain between the second and third quarters of 1993 and also is up 1 percent from third-quarter 1992 levels.
The third-quarter tourism reading was 162.8, vs. 161.0 in the second quarter. For the first three quarters of 1993, tourism-related activity in Michigan is running 5.2 percent above the comparable period of 1992.
During the summer, Mackinac Bridge crossings were up a very strong 10.3 percent from year-earlier crossings, and occupancy rates at Michigan hotels and motels showed a similar 9.4-percent annual gain, the best performance since 1988.
These improvements were offset slightly by retrenchment in airline passenger and vehicular traffic. Airline traffic volumes were down 1.8 percent and vehicular traffic, chiefly at Detroit and Port Huron border crossings, declined 1.4 percent.
