THINKING MACHINES CORPORATION APPOINTS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Thinking Machines Corporation Chairman and CEO Sheryl Handler, announced today the appointment of Harvey L. Weiss as president and chief operating officer. Weiss is an experienced computer executive who has played an important role since joining the company as vice president of sales nearly two years ago.
 "We have an enormous opportunity in front of us and we are organizing ourselves to powerfully execute our business strategy," said Sheryl Handler. "Harvey and I will work closely together to strengthen our position of leadership in the industry."
 "We have delivered several dozen powerful CM-5 supercomputer systems, which are being used today in a broad range of research and production environments," said Weiss. "Our architecture has proven to be viable and extensible which allows the CM-5 to be targeted for varied supercomputer applications, from academic research, to large complex research simulation codes, to very large data management and analysis applications."
 Harvey Weiss joined Thinking Machines as vice president of sales in June 1991. Weiss was formerly vice president of Digital Equipment Corporation's Public Sector Group, which included worldwide responsibility for the health care, education, laboratory and government market sectors. During his 20-year tenure at Digital he held a variety of management positions in sales, operations, and marketing. He also served as chairman of the U.S. Affirmative Action board of directors and as chairman of the Compensation and Benefits Committee.
 Weiss is a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Space Foundation, the Brookings Institution Council, the John Hopkins University, G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering Advisory Board, and was a member of the White House Office of Management and Budget Information Technology Advisory Committee. He also serves on the board of trustees of Capitol College in Laurel, Md., the board of advisors of the University of Maryland's Department of Computer Science, the National Security Industrial Association, and as chairman of the board of directors for the Defense Intelligence College Foundation, Inc.
