THINKING MACHINES CORPORATION AND CENTRIC ENGINEERING SYSTEMS INC.
 FORM JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of Thinking Machines Corporation and CENTRIC Engineering Systems Inc., today announced an agreement to support new finite element analysis software from CENTRIC on the connection Machine(R) CM-5, super computer from Thinking Machines. The agreement further solidifies massively parallel computing as an important platform for modem, large scale, general purpose engineering analysis software.
The agreement calls for CENTRIC and Thinking Machines to cooperatively develop a massively parallel version of CENTRIC finite element analysis software on the Thinking Machines CM-5 super computer. The software product will eventually be marketed and sold by CENTRIC. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"We have had a prototype version of CENTRIC's software running here at Thinking Machines for almost a year now. We know a lot about how to make it run efficiently on the CM-5," said Dr. Lennart Johnsson, Thinking Machines' director of computational sciences and a Gordon McKay professor of computer science at Harvard University. "I believe that 1000-processor CM-5 will be the world's largest performance platform for this application."
Dr. Thomas Hughes, CENTRIC founder and Stanford University professor of mechanical engineering noted that, "CENTRIC software on the CM-5 will open up a new era in engineering analysis in which simulations that would have been impossible will soon become commonplace." Hughes further noted, "Thinking Machines has been a substantive and effective scientific collaborator. Their understanding and interest in our highly sophisticated technology has been impressive."
CENTRIC Engineering Systems Inc. was founded to develop new generation engineering tools based on finite element techniques. Its products will model both the solid and fluid mechanics behavior of products, enabling mechanical and civil engineers to simulate the performance of products prior to manufacture. CENTRIC is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif.
Thinking Machines Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of highly parallel supercomputers and the leader in the new desktops-to- TeraOps(tm) computing paradigm, which uses the same high volume components to make the world's largest computers that are also used to make the smallest. Its CM-5 system is the most powerful supercomputer in the world. ---- NOTE TO EDITORS: Connection Machine is a registered trademark of Thinking Machines Corporation CM-5 and Desktops-to-TeraOps are trademarks of Thinking Machines Corporation.
