THERMOTREX RECEIVES PATENT ON PASSIVE MICROWAVE CAMERA
SAN DIEGO, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation

(AMEX-TKN) has received a U.S. patent on its passive microwave camera, which is designed to "see" through clouds and fog to help pilots navigate in low-visibility conditions. The passive microwave camera is one of three commercial products that ThermoTrex is currently developing.
The system will be designed to form images by capturing naturally occurring ambient (or passive) microwave radiation given off by objects in the camera's field of view. Microwaves from trees and other aircraft, for instance, will be detected by a receiver in the nose of the plane. Based on this information, the camera can then form a "synthetic" image that will appear on a cockpit display.
ThermoTrex recently received a $3.4 million contract from the Army to design a passive microwave camera system for Army helicopters. The headway made on this program will be directly applicable to a passive microwave camera system for commercial aircraft.
"The potential world market for the passive microwave camera may exceed a billion dollars," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex. "We anticipate that the pace of competition will pick up next year when the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) publishes specifications for synthetic vision systems for commercial aircraft. However, our passive microwave camera is recognized as having many advantages over other technologies, and this patent will protect our product."
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. Currently, the company is developing several commercial products, including a sonic CT (computerized tomography) system for real-time imaging of soft tissue, a wind-shear detector to provide pilots with advance warning of wind shears, and the passive microwave camera. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
