THERMOTREX RECEIVES APPROVAL TO START THERMOLASE CLINICAL TESTING

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received approval from the Institutional Review Board at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to begin clinical testing of its ThermoLase hair-removal process.
The clinical tests will be conducted in conjunction with dermatologists at UCSD who have experience evaluating new cosmetic- therapeutic products and processes. ThermoLase is being developed as a quick and painless long-term hair-removal system. With the testing protocol approved, ThermoTrex is now in the process of recruiting patients.
In order to market the ThermoLase process, ThermoTrex must obtain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. The safety of using lasers for skin treatments has been established by several systems that are already FDA-approved and in use for the removal of birthmarks and tattoos. ThermoTrex has created a privately held subsidiary, ThermoLase Inc., to manage the development and commercialization of ThermoLase. ThermoTrex owns 81 percent of ThermoLase Inc.'s outstanding shares.
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial products for the medical imaging and avionics industries. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
