THERMOTREX RECEIVES ADVANCED-MATERIALS PATENT

 SAN DIEGO, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has patented a novel process for producing ultra-fine powders, known as nanophase materials, from any metal or alloy. The resulting particles are so small ("nano" is the prefix for one billionth) that they are often referred to as "atom clusters."
 As part of an ongoing contract with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, ThermoTrex has applied this technology to improving the performance of thermoelectric materials used to generate power in space. Significant performance improvements have been achieved by incorporating nanophase materials into semiconductors.
 ThermoTrex now has two patents related to nanophase materials, which can remain suspended in air or be compounded into polymers or other organic compounds. Because they are often highly reactive, nanophase materials have the potential to be used to make more powerful batteries and as catalysts.
 "We performed an exciting experiment that tested whether nanophase materials were capable of catalyzing the breakdown of hydrocarbons," explained Valvo Raag, vice president of ThermoTrex. "The results were promising and indicate that these unique materials could play a role in the remediation of oil spills."
 ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial products for the medical imaging and avionics industries.
