 THERMOTREX RECEIVES ADDITIONAL $1.3 MILLION
FOR NEW GENERATION OF RADAR R&D
SAN DIEGO, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received $1.3 million to begin the second phase of a $4.7 million contract for research and development of ultra-high-range- resolution radar.
The contract is funded by the Defense Science Office of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and was awarded through the Dahlgren division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The goal of the program is to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for recognition of radar signal returns from unknown aircraft and other objects. Ultra-high-range-resolution radar could, for instance, distinguish a DC-8 from a DC-9.
"Using our ultra-high-speed signal processing technology, neural network imaging, and other core technologies, ThermoTrex is committed to developing a system that will have significant advantages over conventional radar," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex. "This kind of precise recognition capability will add a new dimension to radar technology."
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. Currently, the company is developing several commercial products, including a sonic CT (computerized tomography) system for real-time imaging of soft tissue and internal organs, a passive microwave camera that would enable pilots to "see" through fog and clouds to enhance navigation, and a wind-shear detector that would provide pilots with advance warning of wind shears. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
