THERMOTREX RECEIVES $8 MILLION CONTRACT TO DEVELOP A HIGH-RESOLUTION SATELLITE-IMAGING SYSTEM

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 19, /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received a 30-month $8 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Phillips Laboratory to design, fabricate, integrate, and test an unconventional laser imaging system to produce high-resolution images of low-earth-orbit satellites.
ThermoTrex, which won a competitive procurement for this project, will have two subcontractors, Rockwell Power Systems and Hughes Aircraft.
The system is intended for use at the Starfire Optical Range (SOR), part of Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Under previous government contracts, ThermoTrex Corporation (TTC) has developed and lab-tested its high-resolution unconventional imaging system. Under this contract, ThermoTrex scientists will use earth-based laser beams to illuminate satellites and capture the reflected laser light with the SOR 3.5-meter telescope. The collected light will then be focused onto an optical detector array, and the signal will be processed with a computer to reconstruct a detailed image of the satellite. Such a system could eventually enable ground-based diagnosis of malfunctioning military as well as commercial satellites.
"For the last three years, TTC has been applying its expertise in advanced imaging at the Air Force Maui Optical Site, a premier space observation and tracking station," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex. "This contract will give us an opportunity to apply the experience gained on Maui and to demonstrate and field-test our high-resolution laser imaging technology developed under Air Force and Navy programs."
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial products for the medical imaging and avionics industries. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
