 THERMOTREX RECEIVES $1.9 MILLION CONTRACT
 TO DEVELOP ADVANCED RADAR COMPONENT
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received a two-year, $1.9 million contract from the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command in Huntsville, Ala., to develop a millimeter-wave amplifier source for use in advanced radar systems. ThermoTrex's proprietary diamond switch technology is key to the project.
As part of a previously announced teaming agreement, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Varian Associates, Inc. will be a subcontractor to ThermoTrex. Varian is a diversified electronics company with a well- established product line and over $1 billion in annual sales.
"Improving advanced radar systems is our primary focus right now, but we also believe that millimeter-wave technology will have great commercial potential in the field of high-speed communications," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex.
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. Currently, the company is developing several commercial products, including a sonic CT (computerized tomography) system for real-time imaging of soft tissue, a passive microwave camera that would enable pilots to "see" through fog and clouds to enhance navigation, and a wind-shear detector to provide pilots with advance warning of wind shears. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
