THERMOTREX RECEIVES $1 MILLION TO CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT OF RADAR SYSTEM

SAN DIEGO, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received $1 million as part of the second phase of a $4.7 million contract to develop ultra-high-range-resolution radar, a new generation of radar. The contract is funded by the Defense Science Office of ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) and was awarded through the Dahlgren Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
ThermoTrex (TTC) believes that its ultra-high-range-resolution radar may be capable of detecting buried objects such as land mines and has received a $48,000 add-on to the original contract to support related R&D on ground-penetrating radar.
"This program is on the cutting edge of radar technology and promises to deliver a radar that can not only detect and track objects in the most difficult environments but also identify and classify objects that are being tracked," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex. "This is an important new capability for radar and may have applications in industrial security as well as defense situations."
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial products for the medical imaging and avionics industries. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
