THERMO PROCESS SYSTEMS ADDS TWO SITES IN SOUTH CAROLINA THROUGH ACQUISITION OF SOIL-CLEANUP COMPANY

WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 21 /PRNewsire/ -- Thermo Process Systems Inc. (AMEX: TPI) has added two soil-recycling facilities in South Carolina to its national network of sites. TPST Soil Recyclers of South Carolina Inc., a majority-owned subsidiary of Thermo Process Systems (TPS), acquired the sites from Soil Remediation Company, or SRC, which is based in Columbia, S.C. The sites are located in Columbia and Greenville.
Like TPS's soil-recycling centers, the SRC facilities have been used to clean soil contaminated by petroleum products, employing a thermal-treatment process and equipment similar to that of TPS. TPS is currently evaluating SRC's soil-remediation unit and facilities to determine whether they will require modification in order to meet TPS's production requirements and strict environmental standards, which often exceed those of state regulatory agencies. Since both South Carolina sites have access to methane gas from nearby landfills, TPS plans to use the gas to fuel the treatment system as it has done at its Richmond, Va., processing center.
Thomas P. Plunkett, president of TPS, said, "This acquisition is part of our strategy to accelerate the pace at which we can open new soil-recycling centers. While we will continue to develop our own facilities and are currently proceeding with the permitting of several locations in the Southwest, mid-Atlantic states, and on the West Coast, we are also pursuing acquisitions of other soil-cleanup businesses in an effort to consolidate the market for these services."
The company is considering transporting the soil- remediation unit it has been operating for the past two years in Sumter, S.C., to one of the new sites.
Thermo Process Systems designs, manufactures, and sells advanced custom-engineered thermal-processing systems for the treatment of toxic wastes and the automated heat treating of metal parts. The company also provides services for the remediation of petroleum-laden soils, in addition to a comprehensive range of metallurgical processes. Thermo Process Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
