THERMO POWER RECEIVES $1.6 MILLION ORDER FROM CARRIER CORP. FOR NATURAL GAS ENGINE MODULES TO DRIVE ROOFTOP COOLING SYSTEMS

WALTHAM, Mass., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Power Corporation (AMEX: THP) has received a $1.6 million order from Carrier Corporation for 300 natural gas engine modules. The modules, consisting of Thermo Power's TecoDrive(tm) 3000 engine and a compressor unit supplied by Carrier, will drive Carrier's new 25-ton natural gas-fueled rooftop air conditioning systems, which are planned for commercial release later this year.
The Crusader Engines division of Thermo Power will manufacture the 4-cylinder, 3-liter TecoDrive engines, integrate the engine/compressor package, and deliver the modules to Carrier beginning in September 1993. Carrier will complete the system assembly, which is based on its Weathermaker(R) II series of electric rooftop units. The natural gas- fueled 25-ton rooftop system will be marketed through Carrier's extensive sales and distribution network in North America.
Development of the natural gas engine-driven air conditioner was conducted under a joint program between Carrier, the Tecogen division of Thermo Power, and the Gas Research Institute (GRI), with funding primarily from GRI. The gas-powered units can reduce a building's operating costs by cutting electric demand charges and power consumption. Payback on the 25-ton gas engine-driven system is expected to be just over one year when owners participate in widely available utility incentive programs designed to reduce peak electric use or encourage off-season purchases of natural gas.
"Our Tecogen division has worked closely with Carrier and GRI to develop the gas-fueled rooftop unit and has successfully taken the system from concept to commercial field test units that have demonstrated their efficiency in a full year of cooling service," said Marshall J. Armstrong, chairman and chief executive officer of Thermo Power. "This new air conditioning unit is a technological achievement that will benefit both businesses and utilities."
Carrier is the world's largest manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems. It is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX).
Thermo Power Corporation manufactures, markets, and services natural gas engines for vehicular and stationary applications, marine engines, industrial refrigeration equipment, and natural gas-fueled commercial cooling and cogeneration systems. The company also conducts research and development on advanced systems for clean-coal combustion and other high-efficiency gas-fueled devices. Thermo Power is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
