THERMO POWER DELIVERS FIRST DEDICATED NATURAL GAS-POWERED TRUCKS TO U.S. POSTAL SERVICE

WALTHAM, Mass., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Power Corporation (AMEX: THP) today has provided to the Boston District of the U.S. Postal Service the first delivery trucks powered by a dedicated natural gas engine. The vehicles, two of eight that are to begin service in various cities within the next six months, are part of a program to demonstrate the use of Thermo Power's TecoDrive(tm) 7000 compressed natural gas (CNG) engine in two-ton delivery vans owned and operated by the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Service manages a fleet of approximately 8,000 such vehicles.
This demonstration marks the first time that the Postal Service is using an engine that runs solely on natural gas, although the agency has converted a number of its smaller vehicles to bi-fuel operation on either natural gas or gasoline. e?ffort is being co-funded by the Department of Energy and four utility companies: Southern California Gas, Washington Gas Light, Brooklyn Union Gas, and Boston Gas.
The TecoDrive dedicated CNG engine is based on a 427-cubic-inch General Motors engine block that has been fully optimized by Thermo Power to take advantage of the unique properties of natural gas, such as its high octane rating relative to gasoline. This provides performance comparable to gasoline-powered vehicles, but with dramatically reduced emissions. TecoDrive was the first dedicated, medium-duty engine to be certified by the California Air Resources Board, which has set the strictest air-quality standards in the nation.
"We are pleased to have been chosen for this significant demonstration project," said Marshall J. Armstrong, chairman and chief executive officer of Thermo Power. "The Postal Service is playing a key role, not only in curbing vehicle emissions, but in showing other fleet operators around the country that natural gas is a viable alternative fuel for vehicles and that the required technology is available today."
The vehicles are being outfitted with TecoDrive engines and natural gas fuel systems at Thermo Power's Engine Technology Center in Marlborough, Mass. From there, two vehicles will be delivered to each of the cities of Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C., in addition to Boston, for evaluation in regular postal-delivery service. The Boston-based trucks will be refueled at the Everett station of Boston Gas Company.
Thermo Power Corporation manufactures, markets, and services natural gas engines for vehicular and stationary applications, marine engines, industrial refrigeration equipment, and natural gas-fueled commercial cooling and cogeneration systems. The company also conducts research and development on advanced systems for clean-coal combustion and other high-efficiency gas-fueled devices. Thermo Power is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
