 THERMO INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS REPORTS RECORD YEAR-END RESULTS
 WALTHAM, Mass., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today reported that net income increased by 31 percent to a record $24.8 million, or 92 cents per share, on revenues of $338.7 million for the year ended Dec. 28, 1991, compared with net income of $18.9 million, or 74 cents per share, on revenues of $285.4 million for 1990.
 "For the year, we continued to grow as an international leader in environmental analysis, launched new products that strengthened our competitive position in biotechnology, and restored profitability to our environmental services segment," said Arvin H. Smith, president and chief executive officer. "A record $92 million in orders was booked during the fourth quarter, and we ended the year with our backlog at an all-time high and with more than $150 million in cash and short-term investments to pursue opportunities in 1992."
 Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory-based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
